My review of the second volume of the official history of ASIO.

As a student of organisational governance, I love how this book is as much an organisational history as an operational one, especially when looking at ASIO under the Whitlam Government.

Nuggets on ASIO’s infiltration of the Socialist Workers League and Socialist Youth Alliance, both Trotskyist organisations with, in the words of an ASIO agent, ‘professional dole bludgers’.

Love the technique for ensuring ASIO’s clandestine entry op was legal.

I wonder if the Australian Left will revere Gough as much when they realise that it was his government which especially pushed ASIO to focus on terrorism.

ASIO’s work with interagency colleagues (like the CPF) to counter Palestinian terrorism against entities located in Australia, including with the help of the Pal diaspora/‘friends of Palestine’ orgs here.

The terrorists put Bob Hawke on their targeting deck.

What on earth was the Attorney-General thinking?

Eg having the CPF (the pre-AFP), essentially, detain ASIO staff in an auditorium while the building was locked down.

Followed by serious concerns from the US, UK and Canada.
