That's a good point.
Though generally, if you're referring to males only, these days wouldn't you say 'men', keeping 'man' for these hypotheticals?
Still, I'm inclined to agree with you in using 'we humans'.

Eternal question when translating old texts. I guess it depends on your general strategy for the text - how close to the original/natural sounding for today's reader. In short: I'm not sure.

Yes, that's the case (I used to be a publisher). I just find it bonkers that there is no way in an online search to differentiate between the old and new covers, especially in a series where readers might want uniform spines - as I do here.
