📢 v1.114 is rolling out!

Today, we're expanding access to the Live Now beta to everyone.

If you have Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, WebAIM's WAVE extensions can help review sites directly within the browser. Automated tests can't catch everything, but WAVE can still find many barriers and Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG) errors.

Audio descriptions are necessary for making videos accessible. They narrate the crucial visual elements that would be necessary for understanding the plot without the ability to see the screen. They describe non-verbal cues like gestures, facial expressions, or eye contact.

#Bluesky Tip: Always remember to include alt text in your image posts. Not only does it help make your content will be accessible to users, it also makes your posts easier to index for searches.

Alt text always depends on context. Imagine an icon of a computer printer. It could be used on a page of free icons. It could be on a school's computer lab site. Or it could be part of a button that allows you to print the current page. In each instance, the same icon would need different alt text.

A nuanced and detailed explanation of: Twitter breeds shitty behaviour and is inherently toxic.

Choosing to build a platform there is risky, and even using Twitter is damaging for your mental/emotional health.

Stay safe out there <3
I beg of you, if you're a user on here who still has a Twitter account DO NOT look at that place. It isn't worth it. I just did and I can FEEL the mental drain.

Strangers interact with you on there as if they know you, they're absolutely happy to assume and criticise.

You don't necessarily want to use the exact same alt text each time a specific image is used. Alt text must consider the context of the image and why it's being included on a site, post, article, etc. In other words, alt text depends on where you're including the image and why.

With governments getting serious about moving away from X,
I think it is time for a coordinated push towards business to drop X.

Use the contact form of any website mentioning only X/Twitter as their socials to let them know that X is not acceptable.

Who can write a good 1 liner to use? 👇

If you pair light colors (yellow text on white background) or dark colors (dark blue text on black background), users will struggle to read your content. Understanding color contrast will help you better serve all users, especially those with low vision.

Don't forget transcripts for video and audio. These will help blind users and low-vision users, deaf and hard-of-hearing users, people with ADHD, people with audio-processing disorders, and beyond. Transcripts also benefit search engines, people in quiet spaces, and people in a hurry.

Anecdotal, but I'm definitely noticing an uptick in advocacy for violence here. About which I'll say only this: Promoting violence on social media is the work of trolls and fools, those eager to bait others into implicating themselves in the age of surveillance or fools rushing to the gulag.

This doesn't discourage ppl to organize, it just provides information that should absolutely be considered when doing so

Its not about the fact that the Internet is forever, it's that this site is actively monitored by our fascist government and you oughta remember that while posting

It is neither difficult nor expensive to archive virtually everything on Bluesky, and it is trivial for even a relatively inexperienced coder to surveil a large number of accounts and record everything they do and everyone they interact with. You are *fully* on the record here, always.

Probably good to point out with the design of ATProto and ActivityPub, it can be scooped up and archived by anyone. Not just the feds.

Man, a lot of people are responding to this thread in a few stupid ways:
* “Everybody knows that!” No they don’t! Or they don’t think about it
* “I’m not gonna censor myself!” Okay? Great? I don’t give a shit; go phone the FBI directly
* You’re trying to scare people!” No? Information is not scary.
