I was under the impression that Chavez was elected, and the US tried to overthrow him. Why would the US install someone who would nationalise the oil?

American foreign policy has not changed too much, the imperialism has just become far more visible, especially to liberals. International law has never applied to the USA. There is not a single year since the Korean war that the USA has not violated it, and it has never been punished for it.
