I wasn't advocating mining the soil.

Are you seriously saying that a medium clay loam with 5% organic matter and good levels of nutrients is no more fertile than firey sand with 0.5% OM and low nutrient levels?

I know which I'd rather farm.

To me, fertility describes the productive potential of a soil with no inputs.
Irrigation will make a soil more productive but it will not make it more fertile.
