We are happy that our paper in @JoDemocracy is now published. We analyze Mexico's democratic erosion under AMLO, focusing on attacks on core democratic institutions, increasing militarization, and public reactions to the country's autocratization.

In this @JoDemocracy article, unfortunately, we were not wrong in identifying the path of autocratization the country was on.

With the purge of the Judiciary, Mexico opens those gates and moves toward an authoritarian regime (competitive authoritarianism/electoral autocracy).

AMLO relentlessly attacked Mexico's democratic institutions, taking it to the brink of authoritarianism.

As illiberal forces gain power, we must protect individual liberties and the democratic process. But when institutions empower minority groups over the majority, can democracy survive?

President Sheinbaum has given no indication that she intends to depart from the authoritarian path. She has defended judicial reform, moved forward with dismantling the INAI, and further increased militarization

… opening the gates to competitive authoritarianism in Mexico.
rcastrocornejo.bsky.social
Public Opinion: AMLO suffered almost no backlash for his undemocratic actions. An original survey found significant support for closing democratic institutions: Among MORENA partisans, 42% supported closing the INAI, 35% Congress, and 34% Supreme Court (opposition & indep 13%).
rcastrocornejo.bsky.social
The military: AMLO made the military—he calls them “guardian angels of Mexico” or “pueblo uniformado”—an ally in his government. The armed forces now wield more economic and political power than in decades, blurring lines between state, government & party—essential in a democracy.
rcastrocornejo.bsky.social
⚖️ Plan C: AMLO's Plan C purges the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, dismantles the career system, curbs judicial independence, and introduces the popular election of federal judges—raising concerns over politicization and the erosion of a key democratic check.
rcastrocornejo.bsky.social
AMLO also undermined the INE, a cornerstone of Mexico’s democratization. His legislative coalition installed loyalists at the head of the INE, who 1️⃣ played a crucial role in helping MORENA secure a supermajority in Congress and 2️⃣ delayed a full institutional assault—for now.
