Sorry, undergrad here, what is "citation-as-signalling"? I tried to search it up online (no, I didn't ask an LLM lol), and what I found was either about citations in law or citations with phrases like "see also" or "eg". I'm not sure how this relates to citing works one hasn't actually read?
