Yeah, I’ll do that as a short-term thing, but I really want to be able to set up the thing to charge the house so that I can flush the toilets when the power’s out.

That’s not optimal — Tesla surcharges on non-Teslas bring the price up to about the same as a gas powered vehicle. But we’re getting an electrician in to put in a new 240V line, which will charge the thing overnight, and BGE will give us a discounted rate for charging at night.

Actually I think that’s what it looks like, but there’s a black box (actually white for Kias) that handles the switching.

I’ll let you know the details if it turns out to be cost effective.

Right now we just did our first charge, which happened to be at a Tesla station.

It replaces a generator. You need all the right switches and stuff. You also don’t want to feed the current back into the grid. It’s fairly standard stuff, a lot of people around here have gas powered generators, but I’m wondering about using an electric vehicle instead.

I have friends at Central Florida.
I’ve given a talk or two at Central Florida.

We just got a Kia EV9. Claims to be able to power our house for up to 3 days. It’s not usually necessary here, but sometimes the power does go out for a few hours which means we don’t have flowing water, so this would help.
Or we get another Derecho.
Anybody try this? Costs? Reliability?
