Mary McCord, former Acting Assistant AG for National Security, and I teamed up on Qs Senators should ask #Bondi at her Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, on strikes that have killed 17 people to date.

The implications are serious. Consider a few of the Qs:

He also delves into the Administration's 48-hour war powers report to Congress about the strike.

W/ our fellow @tessbridgeman.bsky.social, we have analyzed & uploaded that report, along with 125+ others, at our War Powers Resolution Reporting Project:

And yet further thoughts from me on the lethal US attack in the Caribbean.

The Trump administration hasn’t even tried to legally justify the premeditated killing of these people.

Consider me a consistent opponent of lawless violence at home and abroad.
The U.S. president is asserting the power to engage in the premeditated killing of people outside of armed conflict,” he told The Intercept. “There is no evidence that these people were lawful targets. The Trump administration hasn’t established that there was an armed conflict, hasn’t established that the law of armed conflict governed any such hostilities, and hasn’t established that the people aboard the vessel, the vessel itself, or its cargo were lawful targets under the law of war.”

I really appreciated speaking in depth with @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social about Venezuelan boat strike, what the law allows, and what comes next.

Important for concerns about Forever Wars, those who care about deportation without due process and killing suspects without a trial.

Really excellent explanation by Ryan Goodman of the legal justifications (or rather the lack thereof) of Trump’s boat strike, and of some the (chilling) further implications. An important conversation, I thought, if not a cheering one.

1/ I worked at DoD. I literally cannot imagine lawyers coming up with a legal basis for lethal strike of suspected Venezuelan drug boat.

Hard to see how this would not be "murder" or war crime under international law that DoD considers applicable.
