"One soldier held up an Israeli-made drone, called Thor, which can drop bombs and also parachute units of blood from the sky, factoring in the wind direction, to reach wounded soldiers in Gaza."

The drone's use depends so starkly on whether Israelis see you as human.

Hundreds of Israeli soldiers were badly wounded in Gaza. Here's what saved them
More than 500 Israeli soldiers have survived serious injuries fighting in Gaza, according to the military, thanks largely to lessons learned and advances in medicine.

The issue is trying to lower the temperature by claiming it is lower than it truly is. That factual discrepancy benefits no one but himself.

The self-pity in this set of paragraphs is remarkable.

One former Jewish staffer in the Biden administration who worked on national security issues recalled that while once proud of telling people what he did, any suggestion that he was working on Israel and Gaza felt fraught.

“I was afraid of learning what someone might think, especially someone under 40,” he said. People would drop off cookies for those pulling late nights on the Russia-Ukraine war — there was no such warmth for those pushing Biden’s policies ahead on Israel.

Working on Israel “felt like a long nightmare that never really ended,” the former official said. Trying to balance his longstanding affection for Israel and his outrage for what was happening in Gaza was difficult: “There was no welcome middle ground that was at all possible.”

The success of the far right is not only measured in votes and seats but in its impact on rhetoric, policy and ideology. The fact that a (nominally) social democratic head of government with a huge majority choses to say and do this is maybe the biggest success of the far right in Europe yet.

On the concept of immanence, see Guillermo O’Donnell and Laurence Whitehead’s chapter in this book: muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/monogr...

A study like this, which uses a comparative lens and resists romanticizing the US political regime, is somewhat unusual (see: immanent democracy).

Part of the issue lies in the image of the “shining city on a hill.”
The US sees itself as an “immanent democracy” - the belief that it is inherently democratic. This fosters the assumption that whatever happens is democratic, encouraging complacency and hollowing out the norms sustaining democracy.

What America is going through is not unusual in historical terms. Plenty of examples like it today elsewhere in the world.
What makes it unusual is the rapid collapse from a set of widely espoused norms and values that centered on liberty. It is the sacking of the shining city on hill that shocks.

It's really interesting to see how people with the same surnames, often from the same two or three cities in Palestine, and sometimes even the same families, can have such different behaviors based on whether they ended up in El Salvador or Chile.
