Written November 27, 1973. In college, I was attracted to a girl named Ruth Byer. Too shy to take action, I wrote a song instead. Her father worked on an oil field in Iran, so I included the phrase "I ran" as an inside reference. After that semester, I never saw her again.

My first song, written for the 9th Street Parade Club that my brother and I created in 1964. We ended up doing two parades, one for 4th of July and a Boat Parade in August. The route was from our house to my grandparents' house around the corner.

Another from "Snippets and Incomplete Songs"
I can give it a light touch
I can make it a heavy beat
I can do anything
Even play it with my feet

From: Snippets and Incomplete Songs
Take flight little bird, rise into the sky
Let me know if you can find dry
Bring back something that will let me know
But if you can't find it, don't cease to go
Commentary
Seems like something about Noah's Ark

Roger D. Linder: Snippets and Incomplete Songs
Early morning meadow dew is on the ground
The summer days have let me know what once was lost is found
The farmer in his field, turning up the ground
The humming of his tractor is the world's only sound

Written February 2, 1973. Another song of unrequited love, this time about a girl named Linda that used to come into the grocery store where I worked. The line "but you were always with another" was originally something like "you were always with your brother."

Written March 5 & 6, 1974. I had been dating my now-wife for about a month and this is about her. The first song I'd written that has a time signature change in the middle of the song.
