Snow at all, but I did like getting a little backstory of how the Hunger Games came to be and how he got to be in charge. This story is one that is not only about how the circumstances in someone's life shape them, and if just one little thing had been different or happened later, they could have been a different person. In this one, we see how controlling Snow is and how he wants/needs to be in charge in order to feel safe. This I believe made him into the person he is in the original trilogy, and how it ended up becoming the games we saw in order for him to have control over as much as humanly possible. Seeing the Covey and how they connected to the original series and how maybe just maybe Katniss is a descendant of the family, and that is why Snow was so fascinated and a little scared of her. Overall I did find myself enjoying this book, weirdly enough, because of how we see things fall into place, and it gave insight into the world and series as a whole.

Book Crown of Moonlight by Martina Boone on top of kindle, on a bed of red/burgundy leaves. Thank you to the author for a e-book in exchange for my honest review. Flora is being pressured to marry the highland lords in her surrounding area to protect her clan after the death of her father and older brothers. She is told that that is the only way she can protect her people, yet she does not want to marry any of them. In fact, it appears that she loathes most of them because of how they treated her when they were children. So when she finds Chyr, who is an Ever that is dying and is one of the rebel king's soldier. She chooses to try and save him, even though if she is caught, they will all perish. While nursing him back to health, she learns more about why Chyr and his fellow soldier were in the area, and ends up discovering a lot about herself as well as they try and get Chyr back to safety and have any chance at all to stop the Queen, who is on a war path to control everyone and everything. They have one shot at this, and that one shot is all based on Flora in the end, as they discover she has more power than they ever thought possible. Overall, this story is so good! We have a strong heroine in Flora who is caring and lovable, while also being powerful and standing her ground on what she believes in. With Chyr, you see a warrior who is bound to an oath that he was far too young to understand when he took it, resulting in him dealing with internal battles, as well as physical ones, throughout this book as they try to get to another realm to have any chance at defeating the evil Queen and protecting Flora's people. This book kept me on my toes, and I was not expecting Flora to end up being who she was, but I loved it! Nobody sets up cliffhangers better than Boone, and she has done it again with this series. I cannot wait to read the next book, and I need answers on what exactly Flora did and what type of impact this is going to have on everyone.

Book Review: Lost on Doll Island by Cassandra Ramos-Gomez

It was everything I hoped it would be and more. The perfect mix of spooky and history together. This book has everything from brujaria, hechezios, Aztec talismans and of course creepy dolls. Diego has recently moved to Mexico to live with his aunt and uncle while his parents are getting a divorce. While he doesn't love this, he is getting used to it, and has started to make friends. His new friends Itzel and Jandro who are kind of the outcasts it seems at times, but are truly some great friends as we learn throughout the book. "I am just happy to have them both here with me for this part of my life, my new friends and me, the three amigos." Diego's journey to doll island is one that is a little different, it involves dreams, friends coming up with a plan, and lots of secrecy. Diego was told by a woman in a shop that there were two dolls islands, the fake one that all the tourists go to, and the real one that has a secret doll hidden somewhere that will provide Diego with his wish. So somehow Diego convinces his friends that they need to go to the real doll island to find this doll. Once on the island though things get creepy and mysterious. The three friends start looking around the entire island for the doll and along the way have several near death experiences and really learn what friendship is all about, with a side of Brujaria, talisman, and hechezios. Overeall I loved this story. It was such a quick read for me and just what I needed after a long week. It was just the right amount of creepiness, and fit the age category perfectly. Highly recommend this one for all middle schoolers who like spooky reads!

Moth by Amber McBride This book is very sad novel in verse. Our main character Moth who is the sole survivor of her families car accident. This accident left her with scars, and lots of trauma that we see her trying to navigate throughout this book. She is living with her aunt who is also not dealing with this tragic accident well, and is basically leaving Moth to her own devices. It's the start of a new school year for Moth and with this new school year brings Sani who is a Indigenous boy who is also dealing with trauma and mental health issues. They become friends and then they decide to go on a road trip together for Sani to see his dad and that's when things start getting a little strange, and then it just continues on that path for the rest of the book.Overall, this book does a good job of showing the realities of trauma for both Moth and Sani. With this trauma, we see both Moth and Sani's past a little more as we get to know them. Now, remember earlier how I said the road trip got strange? Well, it led to one of the most jaw-dropping endings I have ever read. It came out of nowhere, and I was not expecting it at all, which shows how good of a job the author did at telling this story. Finding Mr. Purrfect by Codi Gary If you enjoy fake dating stories, then this is the book for you. Closed-door romance, and a purrfect palate cleanser after some tougher reads. This book is set in the same place as the first book, A Cat Cafe Christmas. This one follows Chartiy, who is the first book's best friend. Our main characters in this book are Charity and Will, and they both need a fake partner for different reasons, so they decide to team up. This duo though, does not have it easy when it comes to fake dating, as they don't like each other, and are both dealing with family drama, and Will is super stressed out by his job. Overall this book had some very sweet moments, and I did love the banter between Charity and Will and how they went from Frenemies, to friends, to lovers. It's a journey for sure and at times will have you frustrated with each of them and how they are handling things. I personally really liked the baking show portion of this book, and at times wished we had more of it because of how fun it was to read. I'm interested to see what this author writes next as I fly through their books. Mabuhay by Zachary Sterling This graphic novel was so fun and dealt with some harsh realities that teenagers do face. We have JJ and Althea whose parents own a food truck, and they are expected to work at it after school. This is embarrassing though, as their food is different from what their friends eat, and JJ has to dress up in a pig costume. Everything starts to change, though when their uncle suddenly shows up and with him brings pure chaos of the magical realm it seems. Apparently, their mom has a secret that she's been keeping from them, and because of that secret, they are not prepared for whats coming next. Thankfully due to video games, they know a little bit about what's happening and are able to piece things together and help save the family from death. Overall, this graphic novel is very fast-paced, and I loved it! The author did such a good job of weaving in the magical elements with real life, plus shows what it's like for first generation children to navigate the different expectations that are put on them.

The Nefarious Nights of Willowweep Manor by Shaenon K. Garrity Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc. This book is a bit like clue at times, with a hint of magical powers and interdimensional travel to make it more interesting. The use of the pocket universes makes it so interesting, and as someone who knows very little about it, but I do think if I go back and read the first one, it will make more sense. Our main character of Haley, being from the real world and having traveled to the Willowweep Manor, at times she is learning things about the universe at the same time we are, when it comes to how it works. All of the new characters are exciting and while a little over the top at times, it does make it funny and enjoyable to read. Overall, I think this is a great storyline, and it can be taken in so many different directions to keep the series going. The Scandalous Hamiltons by Bill Shaffer I knew the Hamiltons were messy, but this was far messier than I thought it would be. None of these men can keep it in their pants, it seems, and every one of them has scandal after scandal. That apple didn't fall too far from the tree, and it's honestly sad because they could have done so much if they had just been able to focus more on what matters and a little less on pleasure. Shaffer puts together this story through legal proceedings, newspaper clippings, and other historical documents. This was well-researched, and you could tell the author wanted to get down to what happened to Robert Ray Hamilton. Having said that, I do think at times it does get a bit tedious in the legal proceeding portions due to the repetitiveness that they are at times. I think for some, this will make them not enjoy this book as well. I did personally enjoy it and found it interesting, as I love history, and knowing more about the founders' descendants is always interesting to me. Off the Air by Christina Estes Overall, I think this book is a fairly good representation of what reporters have to deal with while trying to find out what really happened so they can report the news accurately and keep their jobs. Jolene is somebody I was rooting for the entire time throughout the story as she was trying so hard to better her career all while juggling micro-managing bosses and uncooperative police and other contacts. She got crafty with how she got information, all while trying to not break any ethics codes of being a journalist, which is a very fine line. This story is one that had so many twists and turns throughout it all that kept me guessing on what happened and why it happened until the very last moment. It could have been almost anyone, it seemed as radio hosts like this one always have enemies. Highly recommend this one if you want a light mystery with lots of twists and turns. In the Hall with the Knife by Diana Peterfreund TW: murder, death, blood, disordered eating, stalking, & violence If you loved the 80s movie clue then I think you will like this book. In the Hall with the Knife is set at a boarding school for teenagers, which is on an island. This island is now flooding due to the weather and ends up leaving several students and their teachers stranded on the island. Set with a whole cast of characters and pov's, we learn about the school, island, and local village, all while they are in terrible weather and stuck together in one house. As for the murderer, well, that could be any of them, as they all appear to have some type of motive for doing it. The mystery unfolds slowly at first, and then it's a mad dash to the conclusion, which was slightly expected. Overall this book is enjoyable, but you can tell that it is a set-up for a larger series as a whole. I will be continuing with this series as it is fun and a quick read.

Wretched Waterpark by Kiersten White Theo, Alexander, and Wil are sent to live with their aunt, whom they have never met before, for the summer. The three siblings end up getting dropped off at the waterpark every morning by their aunt to spend the day. However, this waterpark is not like any other waterpark they have been to before, and with hardly any other visitors, they kind of have the run of the place. Well, besides the fact that all the workers act like something is happening, the park owner is extremely intimidating, and strange things keep happening in the park. Overall, this book is about sibling bond, and how they can work together and find courage at the most unlike times in order to keep each other safe. The waterpark is a wonderful backdrop for this because of all the different places to hide, and all the things that can go wrong in one especially when the workers don't seem to know what to do half the time. Throughout this boo,k I was noticing similarities in the way that some of the grownups were acting to how they acted in a Series of Unfortunate Events, which I liked and was a nice piece of nostalgic throwback. The author made the story their own while adding in little bits of gothic mystery and some easter eggs to keep the reader guessing on what was going to happen next. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series and see what the siblings have to deal with next for the summer. Mini Book Review Tough Luck by Sandra Dallas Haidie is are main character, a young girl who is looking for her pa, after ma died and her older brother abandoned them at an orphanage after selling the family farm. Haidie and her younger brother Boots are determined to find Pa, who went off searching for gold in Colorado. Haidie first has to find a way for them to leave the orphanage, and then after that, for them to find a way to get all the way to Colorado safely. This is no easy feat and is one that takes them on an adventure of a lifetime. Overall, this book, while paying homage to True Grit, tells an alternative version of what Haidie could have done in order to get to Colorado and see what happened to her Pa, it's really its own story entirely. This story is one that shows the harsh realities of the Old West, especially how it was on the wagon trains, and then in the old gold mining towns. It does not glamorize much and instead shows what Haidie would have really seen if she were travelling in this time period as a young woman, and the things she has to do in order to keep herself safe on the journey. Mini Book Review Fitting Indian by Jyoti Chand TW: Self-Harm, substance abuse, anxiety, depression. This is a very emotional debut graphic novel. Our main character, Nitasha’s parents, want her to be the perfect daughter in every aspect of her life. The problem is that everything Nitasha seems to do disappoints them. They compare her to her big brother, who is studying to be a doctor constantly, and belittle the passion she has for art. Because of these differences, we see the mental health issues that Nitasha has, as well as those that other people in her family have. This graphic novel is emotional, and shows how for a lot of families mental health is just not talked about, and instead you are just supposed to suck it up and go on. Nitasha struggles with the pressures her family has put on her, and it increasingly makes her mental health worse until it reaches a boiling point, and then the family has to talk about it. The strides this family makes with talking about what's happening and how to get better are so important, and I think the author did a great job of balancing it and making it feel realistic.

If you liked Good Girls Guide to Murder, then you'll like this book. Murder Between Friends tells the story of how three childhood friends separate after a murder in their town. One's brother is accused of being the killer, one thinks they saw the person who did it, and one was stuck between the two of them and had to choose who to stay friends with. With the accused killer now being released, it's time to finally confront what happened that night and why their friend group broke apart. With the lawyers and prosecutor not looking for any new suspects, it's up to these three 'friends' to figure out what really happened that night, and what exactly has kept the town on edge in the years since. This book has several twists and turns, and it does go into what happened that night, why it happened, and how it all connects their families together in different ways. It's messy, and complicated, and such a good murder mystery summer read. Where the Guava Tree Stands is a novel in verse that tells the story of Mina and her parents as they move from St. Kitts to Orlando, Florida. It shows the struggles they face from getting used to a new country, dealing with immigration and becoming citizens, and most importantly, how they stick together as a family while learning to thrive in their new home. It's lonely for them at times, but it is also fun and exciting as they get to show parts of the island life to Mina's school friends through food, clothing, and dancing. Throughout this story, you can see the love that the author has for St. Kitts through the way they describe the beauty of the island, and how the main character in the book misses the food, family, the ocean, and even the monkeys that steal all the guavas from her family's tree. Do I think this book is important? Yes. Do I think that reading this book in the time we are currently in, in 2025, is particularly helpful? No, not really. This book goes over the first trump presidency, and how the love of money and power made it what it was, and now is once again. At the time it was published, it was to be a reminder, and a look at what we mostly avoided. Again, it shows how what worked last time and what didn't. Sadly, this is not a playbook like the name suggests, just a reminder of the past, which, while good, is not what I was looking for at this time. This was a re-read for me, as it has been several years since I originally read the trilogy. I had forgotten some of the minor details that were in this book, but my stance on it is still the same. This is one of the best dystopian novels of the modern age that I've read so far. It does hold up to the test of time. However, I do think it needs to be said that Katniss, Gale, and Peeta should not have had to make the decisions they did. Gale should never have been allowed to be involved in such serious conversations when it came to developing weapons; he was far too young and full of anger to properly understand the impact that his actions would have on people. Katniss and Peeta were also still too young, and while they were victors, they were also still children at this time and needed to be protected after having already fought for their lives once. The epilogue is one that is nice, and it does show that with time they were able to heal to an extent, but the lasting scars of war were still there, and ones that they would always deal with.

Full disclosure, this book did not keep my attention. I found most of the characters insufferable for different reasons. While I can appreciate a slow-burning book and leading us on to different characters in a who-done-it way, this book did not do that. Instead, all of the different story lines got confusing after a while, and I really did not see the point of most of the things that happened in this book. The last 1/3 of this book was the interesting part, where we get to the real part of the story and get to see what really happened and why. I can't believe I'm saying this but I feel like this one would have been better as a novella or short story, as 70% of the book felt overdone. Saints and Liars tells the story of the men and women who were sent overseas to help get people out in the lead up to the United States joining WWII. We see the struggles they faced, how they were able to get people's documents that had been misplaced, and the roundabout ways they went to get them to safety. In this book we see that the work was primarily done by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Unitarians who had been sent by there organizations to help Jewish people, artists, etc. escape. Dwork pieces together diary entries, memos, and other documents to piece together the work they did and how they were able to get people out in a time of chaos in Europe. I will say, compared to other non-fiction books of the time, while it does go into detail about the work they did, it does not focus on any one specific person and instead focuses on the many different things that were done to get people to safety. Band of Sisters tells the story of Madeleine Pauliac, a French Doctor, and a group of Red Cross nurses and ambulance drivers known as the blue squadron helped rescue French soldiers and French civilians who had been captured or displaced during WWII. This book goes into detail on how they were able to help save so many people, why they did it, and how they had a lasting impact on the people of Poland. They helped as many people as they could while also being under threat of death or worse by the Russian soldiers. This book is at times a hard read, but it's one that shows the realities of war and the lasting impact it can have on people. If your wanting to know about the people who did the hard work and helped put people and families back together again after the war, then I recommend this book. It's short, to the point, and doesn't sugar coat what the doctors and nurses saw. Pomona Afton is one of those characters that you probably end up not liking due to her attitude. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well Pomona dealt with everything. She got to work, found ways to provide for herself with the connections she had. Pomona shows that she is more than just her family's money, and with the proper support, she is able to not only start her own business, and try and solve her grandmother's murder. This murder is one that is tricky and will involve a lot of sneaking around in order to find clues and to be able to talk to certain people. The murder part of this book was good and kept me guessing on what family member or close friend could have had access to the room, and why in the world they would have done it. Multiple suspects were provided, and I was still surprised by who did it and why in the end. I recommend this book for a good summer murder mystery book!

Mini Reviews of books I finished May 29th - June 4th
Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green I had never read a book by John Green before this one, and I am so glad I started here. In Everything is Tuberculosis, you can tell how passionate the author is and why this book ended up having such a big impact on him. I will be the first to admit that I only know the bare minimum about Tuberculosis, and I don’t think about it a lot, or at least I didn’t until this book, and now I think about it all the time. Green shows how Tuberculosis could be stopped, but due to money and the money and research not being where it should be. Instead it continues to spread in some countries despite them knowing how to cure it because of the lack of funds. This book is a reminder of how we have the cure for things, but the people with the money are not putting it towards what they should be, and instead go and buy another yacht. It also shows how so many things connect, and how things can snowball when you start investigating them. Secrets Never Die by Vincent Ralph The synopsis of this book is what drew me in, as it seemed like the book would be a cross between Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. It reminded me more of Pretty Little Liars, with how the texts and stalking ended up happening for our main character. Secrets Never Die shows the impact that keeping secrets can have on families and a community at large. With our main character and his friends being stalked by someone who claims to know all their secrets and will tell on them if they don’t do what they say. It starts out with daring them to do little things, but quickly escalates into them getting injured and being put into dangerous situations. This entire time, they are being stalked, they are trying to figure out the motive of the stalkers and why they were the target. This is when things get complicated and messy because it’s not just their secrets that are being threatened, but their parents' secrets as well. This is a quick audiobook that will keep you on your toes.

Especially when that family had a mother like Ruby Franke, who demanded control and obedience with very little in return for the rest of the family. This family's story is heartbreaking, but it needs to be told. Shari does a good job of showing what her home life was like while also respecting her younger siblings' privacy. She calls out the wrongdoing that her parents did and does not sugar coat what could have been done to stop it. Shari and some of her family members are working on getting the siblings back together, but it will not be easy, and it is one that is going to take time, and trust is going to have to be rebuilt. I wish all the best for Shari and her siblings and hope they are able to rebuild the relationships and be a family again without Ruby.

The Small and the Mighty by Sharon McMahon - Small and the Mighty tells the stories of people who helped shape America. From the big stories to the little things to have grown our country and made it what it is today. Coconut Drop Dead by Olivia Matthews - Being back in the Spice Isle Bakery world is so nice. I love this family, and community. They stick together and are always looking out for one another. I really hope we get more. Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire - It’s always fun to be back in Seanan McGuire's worlds. This one did not disappoint, and it might be my favorite one she has created. The Villa by Rachel Hawkins - Two writer friends, one villa, and a whole summer together. Love, Laughter, and Betrayal is the best description for this one. Christmas the Ranch by Anita Hughes - Facing fears and getting out of one's comfort zone is hard. With a little bit of help from some unlikely people are mc might just be able to do that and write a book in the process. Girls to the Front by Nina Mata - This is a middle-grade book that tells a mini story of 40 different AAPI women who have changed the world with their voices, inventions, and athleticism.

What I read May 8th-21st Stats Books Read: 7 Audio Time: 20 hr's Pages Read: 750 Currently Reading Tough Lucky by Sandra Dallas - Historical Fiction - 5% Read The Bachelor Contract by Victoria James - Contemporary - 21% Read Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - Dystopian - 5% read Secrets Never Die by Vincent Ralph - Mystery Thriller - 15% read Book Paused The Paris Express by Emma Donoghue I decided to pause this one as I kept getting confused. In the first 20 pages, we saw over 5 different pov’s, and it never said when it was switching to a different character. With everything else going on right now, I just can’t do that many different pov’s. Which is a shame because this book's summary sounds like one I would love. If you’ve read this book, what did you think of it? Should I get it back from the library and try again?
