extremely good question , it could have taken a while to develop them ... a dark age ?

knowing you're ill, but not having tangible evidence for it is tortuous — it's easy for people to assume that you're lazy , malingering or faking symptoms until they look down a microscope or at a graph and give a low whistle.

My heart .... 💔

Chuck's illness really affected me at a time when I wasn't sure if my own muscle pain was real and I wasn't getting anywhere with several doctors — I was proven right after years of self-advocacy and now tests are confirming that my muscles and nerves are under immune attack.

Yep this is it, there's just no way to offer a service at that rate with any other technology.

People really don't know that when you really dig down deep the world basically runs on LTO tape 🤷‍♂️
readyuser.one
Deep Archive does not make almost exclusive use of tapes , given their emphasis on hosting at €1/Tb/mo , minimum storage periods of 180 days and retrieval latency of 5-12h. That screams tape robot to me and I'm very glad of it.

I'm sitting on just 40 Tb of data, all of which I back up directly to S3 Glacier tier , but if I was filming regularly (my camera shoots 1Tb/hour if I crank it up to full resolution) I'd be very well into territory where LTO 8 makes sense.

Amazon do not admit it but there's no way Glacier >

TBH it has made me more closed off , I no longer invest in people the way I once did — the minute a person in the house becomes ' work' I disengage and let them float on.

noooo not the penguins 🫢

The knife very much hit home and had to be removed by a surgeon.... so yeah marginally safer but now I keep more cameras around 🫢
readyuser.one
This is why all I'm doing is pointing out how cheap , safe, convenient and redundant LTO could be for cold copies 🤷‍♂️

I am very much into the philosophy of this, I've been sharing for 20 years or so and while the experience has run the full gamut — from making friends for life to making actual mortal enemies (I was knifed by one of them) — it can very often be its own type of family/community.
readyuser.one
I did think this at the weekend 🙄
readyuser.one
Okay but putting that in a tiny pelican case and sending it to a bank vault every week is quite problematic.

1Pb of LTO tapes is 400 grams of plastic and iron designed to retain data for 40 years.

A 1 Pb server is 100 kilos of drives and associated hardware with an active service life of 3-5y.
