Too often, people can't process complexity, so broader platforms don't gain traction. I recently had a taxi driver who was a naturalized U. S. citizen from Nepal who voted for Trump because he liked the Make America Great Again slogan. He sheepishly admitted he was "beginning to have regrets."

Prior to the 2024 election, a major news org featured weekly interviews from a group of "undecided" voters. A day before the election, one was from a black NICU nurse who hated Trump, but was voting for Jill Stein, because she couldn't support Harris's Gaza policies. I think of that ignorance now.

The Kyrou trade shows DB isn't allergic to trading for smaller Defensemen. Seems most likely that they simply didn't have confidence in Samson long term. Whether Schmidt will prove to be any better is an open question (I doubt it), but Samson clearly wasn't in their plans.
