Our own intelligence is trained on copyrighted content. 500 to 1000 years ago “intellectual property” wasn’t really a thing. Accomodations clearly need to be made for *any* kind of AI development to proceed, and scraping text data from web pages was never a problem when it was used for search.

So, what would you like to see change?
April 24, 2025 at 6:21 PM
Obviously AI is being trained on copyrighted material, but that’s irrelevant if there’s no litigation or legislation based on that fact. Standing around and pointing at AI developments, and saying “this is bad, actually” doesn’t accomplish anything, despite the fact that you have a point.

Right now AI, and particularly LLMs, are pretty crappy. On the other hand, there’s absolutely no reason to assume that this will be true in perpetuity.

There’s no coming back from the Nazi salute and DOGE. We’ve barely begun to experience the worst consequences of these illegally-implemented cuts and firings.

If the Democratic Party were interested in helping the working/middle class, then they would have embraced Bernie and AOC at the earliest oportunity. The Democratic Party serves the wealthy donor class first and foremost.

Roast beef with yorkshire pudding and gravy. Any kind of roast lamb. Sam Smith cider. Double/clotted cream. Stilton cheese.

I said it the British way a few weeks ago in Boston and I got a “pretentious dick” look from the cashier. It was pretty funny.

Devon. You butter your toast before applying jam. Should be no different with double cream or clotted cream.

This is better than the original. Malice is highly motivating, if not more common than stupidity.

I’ve always found gambling absolutely revolting. It’s mostly crooks taking advantage of the desperate and ignorant. Then again I also hate most sports—anything that popular is suspect.

A lot of people use LLMs, so clearly they’re useful in that sense.

The problem is that they are enormously expensive to train and operate, and there’s no realistic revenue model to recoup those costs. Is there one coming, @hankgreen.bsky.social ?
April 24, 2025 at 7:10 AM
The negative externalities of LLMs seem so great that I think most people should probably avoid using them, but clearly some people think they are useful and worthwhile, otherwise nobody would be using them or spending much time talking about them.

My coworker who uses it doesn’t have english as his first language. At times I think it provides decent results even if he doesn’t know the precise terms to type into a search engine.

This probably shouldn’t be the default behavior but it could come in handy.
April 24, 2025 at 3:13 AM
I think it could be good for trivial tasks or problems that someone learning to code needs help with. Rather than searching forums for the answer (doesn’t help that Google search is worse than ever in part due to AI results). Then they can test the code and modify it as needed.
April 24, 2025 at 3:13 AM
Yeah, once again, I’ve never really used it myself but I have a coworker that uses it for lots of things.
April 24, 2025 at 3:09 AM
Many people are truly terrible at it and have a lot of anxiety around it, I’m sure.
