We're planning on being somewhere on the Firth of Clyde - my maternal family were there. Gorgeous countryside and wildlife. Places like the Isle of Arran and Bute to take ferries to, Loch Lomond or Glasgow not far away. I'm really looking forward to it

Difficult times rn, but I'm stubborn and scrappy. Most important thing is getting my old friend through their health troubles, then on to hopeful things in beautiful places (like moving to Scotland - well, back there for me - when my love is ready to retire)

Yayyy! Happy New Year - hope you and Amy are thriving

I'm also trying to make sure that my friend and I take time to enjoy small things they/I have spoons for when possible. A very necessary recharge tactic. Yesterday it was watching a Cole Porter musical

My partner - having had a similar cancer - is being an awesome backstop

And I'm ok with it not being ok just now. Priorities

This comes on top of me being diagnosed in the past few months with an inherited autoimmune condition that's been sapping my energy too. I'll be ok eventually, it's just not going to get much easier for a while

Day 16: Nyaff. Many a time I've heard Mum muttering angrily about some 'wee nyaff' or other that had annoyed her. I was surprised it means annoying barking or chatter too #Scotstober

Day 15: Warlock. Not just a male witch, but also a scoundrel or even the de'il! #Scotstober

Day 14: Sleekit. A famous word to describe a wee cowering timorous beastie! Smooth haired, soft. But can mean cunning too #Scotstober

Day 13: Plooter. To potter about, splash around messily in mud etc, walk feebly in snow #Scotstober

Day 12: Patch. Modern Scots - ignore (a message) or break up (a relationship) #Scotstober

Day 11: Oxter. Yer oxters are yer airm pits! #Scotstober

Day 10: Swick. Swindle, cheat, swindler. Not a word I use often tbh #Scotstober

Aye 😂

Day 9: Trauchle. Trample, trampled, bedraggled, spoiled. My Dad cussing that he'd 'trachelt' a golf stroke. Stragglers on a family walk being called 'trauchlers' by my Nanna #Scotstober

I learned recently that my Gran's brother - always called 'oor Erchie' - was Alexander not Archibald!

Day 7: Kinnen. Also spelled 'Kinning'. Rabbit #Scotstober
October 23, 2025 at 7:04 AM
Day 6: Quaire. As well as spellings that ask 'where' or describe part of a kirk, it's also in the title of Lewis Grassic Gibbon's A Scots Quaire. In this case it refers to a long literary work - a fabulous trilogy in Doric and Scottish English. It's set around Stonehaven #Scotstober

Day 5: Peedie. Like 'peerie'. 'Peedie means "little," but Peedie Tam was a strapping young giant of six feet. It turned out that he was merely known as "Peedie" Tam to distinguish him from his father, who was "Old" Tam.' (1936 magazine article) #Scotstober

Day 4: Dwang. An unfamiliar one for me - to compel or force, noun or verb #Scotstober
October 23, 2025 at 6:48 AM
Day 3: Dewar. From Gàidhlig deoradh - pilgrim. Originally a hereditary role taking care of a saint's relics. Later a clan name and btw 'clan' just means 'child' in Gàidhlig! #Scotstober
