When Boris started trying to position himself as Pericles, all I could think was that he was a shit Alcibiades. I was just randomly thinking about how Nicias doomed Athens at Syracuse while out walking the dog and then I suddenly remembered that Syracuse was all Alcibiades' idea.

I think this is another reason I'm disturbed that the government has u-turned on raising income tax. We need that revenue.

And ironically, the disruption to this process creates a flywheel effect which reinforces public distrust of polticians and democracy through more inexperienced, poor leadership and decision-making as we face more and more challenges and crises.

I know what you mean. I just sometimes have to remind myself of everything we've gone through in the past 17-18 years. And that is without going back to the WoT. We do a lot of forgetting while still living with the tremors in a traumatised society.

Were we actually in normal times in 2015? The Brexit vote didn't materialise from nowhere. I don't think much has been normal since the Global Financial Crisis and how it disrupted faith in the elites and institutions.

As an ex-regulator, I find it really insulting. We had to try to clean up the massive mess after the GFC and now we are cast as violent oppressors. And its weird. I half expect a "Rise up bankers! You have nothing to lose but your chains!"
