Chicken rice 🇨🇳 🇸🇬 🇲🇾 from Hainan House, Upper Street N1. This is more a Chinese version rather than the South East Asian ones I’m used to - spiced slightly differently and less peppery, and cooked rare. Quite decent with the sauce though. #redharesrestaurants

Two Irish oysters 🇮🇪 and octopus salad 🇬🇧 served in a scallop shell, from Shellseekers, Borough Market SE1. Lots of oyster bars in Borough Market, but I like this one because the prices are reasonable and the helpings quite filling. #redharesrestaurants

Breakfast hash (veggie) 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 at KIN Cafe, Foley St W1. Asparagus, sweet potato, broccoli, halloumi and poachies. As decent a veggie breakfast as I’ve ever had, and surprisingly hearty too. Had to redo this post due to a busted hashtag. #redharesrestaurants

Choripán sandwich, Argentinean chorizo in a fat crusty roll, brushed with chorizo dripping (+ salad), and a beef and olive empanada 🇦🇷 from Porteña, Borough Market, Stoney St SE1. Now I know where to get these fellas in London, very good, easily as good as any I had in Barcelona. #redharesrestaurants

Boerewors sausages, chakalaka, grilled sweetcorn and beetroot salad 🇿🇦 a great little #workscran. Autumn food for autumn day.

Prix fixe menu 🇫🇷 at Soutine, St John’s Wood High Street NW8. Seafood bisque, steak hache with pepper sauce and chocolat liégeois. Simple and comforting, it did indeed transport me to Paris for an evening. #redharesrestaurants

Lamb and cumin biangbiang noodles 🇨🇳 at Xi’an Biangbiang Noodles Aldgate East, Wentworth Street E1. There’s a burgeoning Chinatown in the Aldgate / Spitalfields area, where you can get stuff like this - flavourful and warming. The noodles are pleasingly chewy. #redharesrestaurants

Bakso 🇮🇩 at Pino’s Warung, Camden Stables Market NW1. Now that it’s getting colder, I find noodle soups comforting and warming. And I didn’t think I’d find bakso in London. The rendang looked good too, maybe next time (redoing a busted hashtag). #redharesrestaurants

Shrimp kong bāgā (smash burger with breaded fried shrimp) and miso loaded fries (fries topped with pickled ginger, kewpie mayo and nori) 🇯🇵 🇺🇸 at Hambaagasuuteeki, Buckingham Palace Road SW1. This place does Asian inspired burgers, and they’re very tasty indeed #redharesrestaurants

Jollof rice, suya chicken, coleslaw and salad 🇳🇬 I love African #workscran day, the work canteen always makes a good effort. Jollof rice needs to be a regular item.

I’m sure I’m not the first person to have this idea for a T shirt, but am pleased with the result 😁

Fraldinha steak, chimichurri, rice, Brazilian egg and potato salad (is that really a thing?) and salsa 🇧🇷 work canteen doing a bit of #workscran rebrand and rebadge 😂 but it was very yummy anyway.

Pabellón arepa 🇻🇪 at Arepazo Bros Arepa, food truck in Camden Market NW1. Stewed beef, plantain, cheese, salad and salsa in a hot arepa 🤤 not easy to find in London but I found it! 🙌 #redharesrestaurants

I taught my kids how to eat rice with their hands (scoop and thumb, brace with veg, and rice ball techniques), with chopsticks (bowl and spoon, pick up, and shovel), and western cutlery (fork and spoon, fork and knife). And crucially, when to.

They’re comfortable and well mannered in all settings.

AI slop has invaded cycling. 😡 Thankfully no ‘books’ on the classics yet.

The same ‘author’ appears to have written ‘books’ on most football clubs, Yorkshire CCC, NFL teams, the Chicago Bulls and Leicester Tigers RFC.

Fine British cooking 🇬🇧 at Roe, Park Drive E14. A delicious mushroom parfait with sourdough, octopus and bacon skewer, lamb shank with black garlic and rendang sauce, and apple crumble with tonka bean ice cream. Very satisfying, and a riposte to those who say British food is bad. #redharesrestaurants

Veal scaloppine in white wine sauce 🇮🇹 roast potatoes and broccoli, at Mezza Luna, Heath Street NW3. This is one of my favourite dishes. It’s a ‘test dish’, to see if an Italian restaurant can do nice stuff outside pizza or pasta. This place passes with flying colours. #redharesrestaurants

Jerk halloumi, coleslaw, rice and peas, plantain and pepper sauce with a chicken patty on top 🇯🇲 yeah, West Indian #workscran always goes down a treat 🤤

Some special skewers which I always get. Kamonegi on top, which is duck with skin on and spring onions, and gyutan on the bottom, which is thinly sliced beef tongue. No tare on these, they’re simply seasoned with salt and you add lemon at the table. Again, perfectly smoky.

“Grilled set B”, and my favourite. Left to right: chicken and onion skewers x2, quail eggs, chicken wing, chicken livers and chicken gizzards x2. The chicken and onion and the chicken livers have been slathered with house tare which caramelises a treat. It’s barely changed in 20 years.
October 12, 2025 at 2:38 PM
“Grilled set A” as Jin Kichi calls it. Clockwise from top left: roasted prawn head, lettuce garnish, roasted king prawn, pork roll with shiso leaf, chicken and onion x2, asparagus wrapped in bacon, minced chicken balls and shiitake mushrooms. All perfectly grilled with a touch of smoke.

Nasu dengaku, roasted aubergine with sweet soy and miso. I’m fairly sure this is roasted on a robata grill as opposed to in a salamander (as most restaurants in London would do), and so it tastes extra smoky. The key is a high temperature to melt the aubergine.

First, some carbs to cleanse the palate. Zaru soba (cold soba noodles), and I particularly like the dipping sauce here, it’s got a bit more ponzu in it than usual, so it’s almost lemony. The best bit is I can drink what’s left in the sauce bowl.
October 12, 2025 at 2:38 PM
Aubergine kebab, yoghurt, hummus, rice, Moroccan salad… and a massive falling-apart side order of chicken pastilla 🇲🇦 I have no idea why this #workscran was so much bigger than usual. I’m fairly sure that’s one portion of pastilla.

Peking duck London style 🇨🇳 🇬🇧 that is, roast duck with soy and maltose rather than with the lacquered skin, but deboned and eaten in rolls, at Wing Tai Restaurant, Edgware Road NW2. Most North Londoners who need Asian groceries know this place. Still reliable #redharesrestaurants
