Dehydration has brought out the sweetness and they've retained some colour.
I prefer them dried.

Is there a particular plan for them?

Wow.
Niche crops that are consistently in demand are definitely worth a try.

Can't remember if I've already said, but I've used field beans.
Wasn't planning on getting a crop from them, but did in the end. So double the benefit.
Especially in beds that won't be planted up til a bit later.

How many plants do you have?
Is it something you're looking to eventually produce in larger quantities or are they just for family use?
October 31, 2025 at 5:45 PM
Will you be trialing other methods in other beds to see which works best?

I've had mixed success, but mine are outside. Tried to overwinter them, but it didn't work & the next year I had loads of seedlings show up around the garden.

I believe they do better in pots than in the ground.

This is the one in the hanging basket which had bigger fruit that the one in the pot.

Physalis (Cape gooseberry).

If you let just one fruit drop to the floor and leave it there, you'll have loads of plants next year like me 😂

Although the most sturdy physalis plant I've had this year was self sown in a hanging basket and I thought I'd leave it to see how it did.

Yes. I have a Chilean guava.
I did have a Pineapple guava but it didn't survive the winter.

My chilean was hit by frost a couple of years ago, but has now fully recovered.

I made a spread with the berries and white alpine strawberries last year. It was 👌

Excellent late season fruit and that smell is also wonderful.
Excellent choice 😊

They look like quite large berries and a great colour.

👏👏👏
Congratulations!
Well deserved.
I know you don't do what you do for recognition like this, but it's still always nice to get an award and for more people to learn about what you do 😊

Excellent!
We have some growing in the field at the bottom of our street.
Absolutely covered in berries this year. A pain to pick, but I made some apple & sea buckthorn spread and also added some to white port to make a 'medicinal' winter drink.

First time I've picked & eaten it. I really like it.

I love the contrast between the colours on the stem and on the cap.

It seems to have brought the sourness out. Which is fine for me because I like sour.
They're a bit like a cooked gooseberry.

I prefer them fresh because they have a slightly crunchy skin and sweeter, with some sour, flesh.
Texture-wise, fresh is better.
Maybe more suited with cheese than porridge.

The kiwi berries weren't very big so I put them in whole.
After about 10 hours at 60 and another hour or so at 70, they still weren't done, but the apples were.
They've dehydrated but still have too much moisture to store properly.
I'm not putting the dehydrator back on for a handful of berries.

You're Manchester way, yes?

You might find oat flour in a local Polish shop or Unicorn Grocery in Manchester who also had some excellent Rosette apples in a few weeks ago.

You can always make your own from oats if you have a good blender. Mine isn't good enough to get a fine enough flour.

It's wheat free, but if you need gluten free, you might have to get a gluten free version. If it doesn't specifically say gluten free, they can't guarantee it hasnt been contaminated I think.

Wheat and dairy make me unwell so I use oat flour instead. Makes a denser mix, but I like it.

I don't know if you do much baking and would be interested, but I made this last week.

Thinly sliced apples on the bottom. The top is a fluffy pancake mix made with oat flour and I added a carrot, nutmeg and sultanas.
Was perfect for breakfast (or any other time).

Thank you. You prompted me to have a go myself and I've now got 4 shelves full of apples. Mainly my mystery £5 B&Q apple and a couple of Russets.

I've also added some of my first crop of kiwi berries to see how well they dehydrate.
