it's unfortunately one of those sites that was first found by an excavator instead of an archeologist so a lot of the items were found without context just in piles of sand and dirt that had been moved by the construction people :( this map of the identified gravesites gives a sense of the scale

it really is a crazy site, they found something like 40+ graves and just so so much stuff, weapons and horse stuff and pots and kettles and stuff but also preserved textiles and these gorgeous glass beads<3 i saw the textiles and two of the beads irl today n__n

i drew some iron age buckle brooch things from the huge vilusenharju gravesite and came back home and realized i have pdfs with the original 1960s drawings and photos of the same exact same grave (number 8) that the stuff i was drawing is from

holy moly this taught me so much about my own language - especially fascinating are the remnants of proto-germanic that have disappeared from english, german etc but are preserved in finnish words :O
