My dad has been gone for 12 years now. He was liberal to the core, funny as hell, a compulsive reader, an amazing cook and baker, and I adored him.

He was also career Navy and would have been thoroughly disgusted with the current administration.

Many of us women of a certain age took their husband’s name upon marriage. I kept my married name after my 30-year marriage ended because I’d had it more than half my life. Plus people don’t mispronounce it.

I recently bought a handgun, something I never in my almost 70 years thought I would do.

My son is a manager at a company owned by a retired police detective, and they’ve both been invaluable in teaching me gun safety and making sure I get range time. I hope I never *need* to use it.
