In 2019 I decided I wanted to read all the Marvel comics* starting from Fantastic Four #1 onward. I've been reading on and off and I'm up to around 1979 on most titles. Follow if you want to hear my random musings about comics, TTRPGS, and other geekery.
When I see complaints about a modern comic being nonsensical, I think about an early Fantastic Four issue.

It's the one where Namor starts a movie studio with treasure found in stolen ships for the sole purpose of luring the FF in with the promise of movie stardom and trapping them.

Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Can you tell me what you remember about ..."
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"I hate transitions."
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Yes, I will write you a letter of recommendation."

There are certain superheroes and villains that make me want to form the League of Very Specific Powers.

First nominees are Gorgon (kicks things hard) and Stilt-Man (is very tall).

We're all thinking it, but I'll say it. When will they be announcing Stilt-Man as the main villain in Avengers Doomsday?

So this is the guy who just saved Ghost Rider from the devil in Ghost Rider #9, before disappearing without giving his name.

I think this is the most literal deus ex machina that I've ever seen.

I'm reading early Ghost Rider (1974), and he's fighting the second iteration of the Zodiac. I have to think that Roy Thomas and Sal Buscema had a lot of fun coming up with the powers for all twelve of them.

One of the qualifiers of an Assassin's Creed game is how much I find myself holding my breath as I climb up to the highest points in the city.

On that scale, Unity scores extremely well.

I've been playing Assassin's Creed games lately, and right now I'm playing Unity. The unique thing about AC games is that at every big story moment, you run the risk of the game fading to black and making you walk around an office or dig site and read memos before you can have fun again.

Next up -- it looks like Marvel Unlimited has added a bunch of new Ghost Rider Vol 1 comics since I last checked. I'm going to read from Issue 6 to around Issue 40 or so.

This is really exciting as Ghost Rider is one of my favourite superheroes! I've always loved the penance stare as a super-power.

I finished reading that brief Daredevil arc and have a few thoughts:

1. Bullseye remains one of my favourite villains for his lunatic simplicity.

2. I really liked the Black Widow/Daredevil relationship and I kind of wonder what it would have looked like if she stayed with him.

My next comic book run is going to be Daredevil 146 - 164, as Frank Miller took over writing on that title for Issue 165. He was the penciler for 158-164 so the art changes early, but he doesn't take full control of the title until 165.

My read of the Thor run (262-302) is finished. Thor is currently exiled from Asgard. It's not the first time, and I'm sure he'll do great things on Midgard, but now it's time for some comics with fewer "thees" and "thous."

If you think about it, every Thor story ends with a deus ex machina.

My Thor run continues (262-302).

Thor's quest to stop the giant ancient robot Celestials from rendering judgment on Earth continues, as attempts to get information from a mutant wrestler named Red Bull failed.

Just hit this panel in Thor 284, and now I'm thinking I should start reading more carefully.

I'm reading Silver Age Thor comics and you can put most of the stories in one of three categories.

1. Dude, where's my hammer?

2. Dude, where's my dad?

3. Woah, it's Loki, guys!

This run of Thor comics is beautifully drawn and coloured (Roy Buscema and Chic Stone as illustrators, with Roy Thomas writing).

I'm up to 284, so the Celestials have finally appeared. Their bright colours really go well with Thor's costume and it makes for some beautiful art.

I'm starting to see Marvel's Odin as the ultimate frustrating boss.

1. He's often out of the office and nobody knows where he is.

2. When he is in, he's napping in his office.

3. He appears in an ongoing situation makes a big proclamation, and leaves.

4. He declares feasts (pizza parties).

Still reading through this run of Thor (262-302) and I'm up to Thor 278. The Asgardians have been trying to stave off Ragnarok for about five issues, and all I can think is that the Yancy Street Gang would have this sorted by now.

I love current action movie franchises (John Wick, Extraction) and the way they have to escalate from movie to movie.

This leads to gunshots that hit bulletproof clothing, and do no more damage than a blocked punch.

There are certain rules of the Marvel universe that are sacrosanct. Some of these are:

1. Uncle Ben is the blood sacrifice that powers the Marvel universe. As long as he is dead, the world continues.

2. If you're going to a super-wedding, be ready to fight.
January 29, 2026 at 6:57 PM
So one of the Thor issues I've read recently had him up against Stilt-Man.

I just want to say that I love Stilt-Man. He's the ultimate jobber, taking on fights up and down the power spectrum from Daredevil to Thor, and his super power is "being tall."
January 29, 2026 at 6:45 PM
Not for nothing, but it's hard to take Asgard seriously as an eternal home for immortal warriors when every few months everyone is running around yelling about how Asgard is no more because of the new threat that has arisen.

Despite not being the biggest fan of Thor stories, the art is always amazing. The current artists (Thor 275) are John Buscema and Tom Palmer. They and the colourist (B. Sean) do an amazing job of the bright, multi-coloured look of Asgard and its inhabitants, without the art getting confusing.
