its gotten less even in time, but its also shed the most infuriating bits of childish naivite. i still think its weird RETVRN bucolic glow is kinda off-putting, but it does serve an insanely appealing fantasy. it made me cry floods and i want to follow it through.

i was reading this being like. this is bullshit no one's life is like this this is insane fantasy, fully acknowledging how seductive the idea of trying hard things and succeeding forever is. that changed with an arc on obon that actually formed a perspective on failure and loss that broke me open

Akebi-chan's Sailor Uniform. this is complicated. i feel like i was hate reading this for the longest time, or at least as a kind of self-flagellation. its pastoral romanticism starts off real cloying, and as a character Akebi is Literally Perfect, the consummate risk taker perpetually rewarded

i got the sense that the creator thought, once the boundaries of sex and sexuality are thrown open we are into the raw id and everything that comes out is Real Authentic Expression, and that didnt really line up with writing a functional story about writing functional stories. cute but baffling

Ah and Um Are All She Says. girl with difficulty communicating draws deeply expressive eromanga to compensate, this was kinda great in theory, but its very strange to spend many volumes being told 'this character has something to say that can only be drawn' and struggling so hard to articulate it

Howling Song for Husky Girl. only a couple releases in, im more here for the translators notes lol. its a trans girl saying 'mf you better voice train' and it might have singlehandedly got my ass into gear. the story is sweet and not unconnected to why i find voice training fuckin intolerable lol

there are these nails against chalkboard moments, frequently at the ends of chapters, where shimamura looks at a girl who has made no attempt to understand her and thinks 'ah... we dont understand each other. oh dear' and this is romantic?? or sweet?? deeply terrifying understanding of relationships

Adachi and Shimamura. this one makes me very, very mad. obviously theres a light novel which im not gonna read, but it concerns me so so much that this was so regularly pitched as emotionally touching or insightful, which it is two girls with different depression failing to relate forever. hate it

A Joyful Life. longform thing that ends up being about 'toleration' and the kinds of hurt one can absorb and internalise before things start to snap. lovely meanders and achingly slow with the romance but really at its best when its dealing with avoidance and all of its costs. very very strong rec
