My syrup also came from North Hatley, from my cousin's farm where my grandmother and his grandfather were born.

My mother remembers pickles, my grandmother (from No. Hatley) served with doughnuts, but maple & pecan sounds like my speed, too!

Well, the snow was a bit wet, and we had to do it inside, so it was a bit messy, but still fun. Soooo sweet, though. Need some pickles 🥒!

Sugar-on-snow is maple syrup, boiled to about 235°F and poured over fresh, clean snow to make maple candy. This is an ancestral activity for me; the syrup comes from my cousin's farm in Quebec, founded by our 2nd great-grandfather.

And they were friends when my grandmother went through this loss. #Newspapers have provided me with a lot of genealogical information, but also new perspectives even on those I knew in life. What a treasure trove! #thankful

I only met "Auntie" Marg a handful of times, on Prince Edward Island, where she and "Uncle" Buck retired. But she and Grandma shared a bond I knew nothing about. Both had husbands overseas during this long and stressful war, both had children to raise and households to run alone but together. 2/3

These short items in old #newspapers can be such a great way to start conversations and revive memories. I've had many of these talks with Mum in the years I've been researching, but there's always more there. #familyhistory #quebec #BAnQ

I also saw the whole battalion in one place for, I think, the 1st time. It was huge. And I've been reading news items about the group & events my grandmother organized. I know neither did these things alone but it's so impressive to me. Where did that gene go?? I can barely organize my sock drawer!

For reference, my grandfather was Lt. Col. George W. Smith, OBE, ED, CD. He was C.O. of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Engineers.
