Remember LOP
@rememberlop.bsky.social
Posting random bits & bobs here to help keep alive the memory of Leeds Other Paper (1974-1994), possibly the greatest little newspaper in the world. This account is maintained, after a fashion, by @writerlytone.bsky.social
A bridge too far? It's good to see this old LOP 'exclusive' given a new lease of life in the splendid Yorkshire Almanac 2026, courtesy of @organgrinder.bsky.social.

'There's nothing like people for making a place human' - 50 years ago this month the future of Kirkgate Market following a big fire was concerning Leeds Other Paper and its readers.

Ah the Au Pairs...different but equal, eh? Saw 'em play in Potternewton Park for Rock Against Racism and the Anti Nazi League, summer of 1981. They were great. Here's the ad from Leeds Other Paper the week before.

Here's the first issue of York Stop Press!, a paper produced by striking @nujofficial.bsky.social members during the #WinterOfDiscontent in Dec 1978. We at Leeds Other Paper helped with production - as a workers' co-op we were not part of the provincial newspapers dispute.

Here's Leeds Other Paper's coverage of that for you.

Anyone remember the old Roscoe pub on Chapeltown Road in Leeds?
These former regulars did - they laid a plaque after it was demolished (as reported here in LOP from Dec 1983). Sadly, even the plaque now seems to be buried beneath the Sheepscar intersection. Either that or someone nicked it. Shame.

Here are two pre-publication dummies of what eventually entered the world as Leeds Other Paper. Who would have thought it would go on to survive 20 years, eh?

It's good to see some old LOPs being used in 2025 'to chat, collage, and collectively process the month's news and what we can do to fight back'.

A fine building - but don't forget that from 1981 to 1987 #LeedsOtherPaper was also based there. Our editorial office was in what had once been the gents' toilets, if I remember rightly.

Enough is enough - good to see #ReclaimTheNight featured in today's Yorkshire Evening Post.

Some curious sightlines but some great gigs. Much missed. It's a Hugo Boss store now 😞

Good too to see LOP's man at the front of gigs with the big old camera - Tony Woolgar - being recognised at @leedsmuseums.bsky.social's #MusicLeedsUs exhibition.

WOMEN RECLAIM THE NIGHT
There are lots of Reclaim the Night events across West Yorkshire this weekend - here's Leeds Other Paper's report of the first one, back in 1977.

Also, there's a good quote here from Kevin Lycett (of Mekons fame), placing LOP in context - from the 'Music Leeds Us' exhibition at @leedsmuseums.bsky.social ⬇️

Shhh... A copy of Leeds Other Paper/Northern Star with #Chumbawamba on the front page, spotted in the fab @leedsmuseums.bsky.social exhibition on the music scene in Leeds now on at Leeds City Museum.

Introducing Our Lily 45 years ago this month...
October 2, 2025 at 7:48 AM
When Leeds Other Paper switched from fortnightly to weekly, the back page comic strip alternated between John Quail's traditional Big Doylem and the new Our Lily by Terry Wragg. Here is her first one from Oct 1980, introducing Our Lily.
