🎙️ episode drop🎙️ Chapter 43 part 1

This chapter admits of dualities? So here in part 1 we cover the first half (gold 金), which involves some extensive bickering over money (including an eyebrow-raising subscription scheme to raise funds for Xifeng’s birthday…)

a post about a novel that is directly in dialogue with Dream of the Red Chamber, is easily one of the greatest queer novels of the 19th century, and which, to this day, does not have an English Wikipedia entry

If it were Rereading the Karenina, we'd be done by now!

#time #fake #construct #stone
rereadingstone.bsky.social
So, yeah, this is why "it's taking so long," in case you were wondering

we are working through 2 and a half Kareninas, except with poetry, indeed, a lot of poetry, most of which we try at least to touch upon
kmichaelwilson.bsky.social
I'm seeing English translations of Anne Karenina quoted at 340,000 words, so Dream of Red Chamber comes out to about 2 and a half Kareninas (taking the Hawkes translation to be 845,000 words)

bit of a delay in editing, getting files in order, etc. etc.

it's worth it, though, thanks for your patience; time is a construct when you're red-chamber dreamin'

Or is it Daiyu who should be “called out” for her classist joke?

🎙️episode drop🎙️🌺 continuing the discussion of Chapter 42

Daiyu and Baochai exchange literary intimacies, and meta-literary musings! Is reading bad, actually? Or, is it Baochai who is kind of a fascist? Would Baochai reframe from reading her own book?

painting depicting Grannie Liu aka "Mother Locust" (but don't call her that) another painting, same series, Grannie Liu chatting with Grandmother Jia, most of the gang present

Will Daiyu be cancelled for her classist remarks in Chapter 42? Find out soon, in this upcoming episode currently being edited!

他是那一門子的姥姥?直叫他是個『母蝗蟲』就是了!
Daiyu in jest comparing Granny Liu, with her progeny always buzzing about, to a "classical" (in another context one might say "biblical") swarm of locusts

Suppose you were facing a lifetime of strangely illiquid “tear debt,” would you seek solace in historical novels and plays that serve no clear moral or dogmatic purpose?

🎙️episode drop 🎙️ we're talking chapter 42 of Dream of the Red Chamber #紅樓夢

Suppose your child were born on the seventh day of the seventh month, what would you do?

Almost forgot to add, there have been some notable Qiao-jie sightings of late! Rumors of this naming's reflecting Granny Liu's "folk wisdom," confirmed!

As the podcast progresses, these inter-literary connections become more and more foregrounded:

Remember in Chapter 42 of Dream of the Red Chamber 紅樓夢, when Granny Liu uses her “folk wisdom” to choose the name Qiao-jie for Xifeng's daughter, on account of her serendipitously (qiao-he 巧合) being born on the 7th day of the 7th month!

Well, check it out, we got another one!
same deal, 7th day, 7th month, let's call her Qiao-jie 巧姐, excerpt from A Fated Mating to Quake the Ages 《醒世姻緣傳 》(17th C.), a work that I really like so far (haven't finished it... it's long!) and which I'm increasingly inclined to believe influenced HLM in significant ways

這一年,狄員外又生了一個女兒,因是七月七日生的,叫是巧姐。薛教授又生了一個兒子,十月立冬的日子生的,叫是再冬。彼此狄薛兩家俱送粥米來往。
