(2/4) Despite this payoff, finance directed towards #climate adaptation currently constitutes less than ⅓ of total climate finance. Now is the time to scale up #adaptation worldwide—recognizing that the benefits of adaptation extend from economic and beyond, to human health, culture, and the land.

(3/4) #COP30 President André Aranha Corrêa do Lago comments, “For developed countries, adaptation finance ... yields global stability and domestic benefits. For developing countries, adaptation … saves lives, safeguards jobs, protects infrastructure, and reduces inequality.”

(2/6) Taking place from November 10-21, COP30 will be the thirtieth time the signatories to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have gathered since 1992.

(3/6) COP30 builds on major historical agreements, from the 1992 Earth Summit, which culminated in the signing of the #UNFCCC, to the development of the Kyoto Protocol, the first #international treaty aiming to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

(4/6) The Paris Agreement, signed during COP21 in 2015, led to the development of the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA)—which will be in the spotlight at COP30 this November.

(5/6) In contrast to previous years, COP30 will place renewed emphasis on #adaptation. In the words of COP30 President Designate André Aranha Corrêa do Lago,

“Adaptation has demanded the courage to let go of what no longer serves us while preserving what defines us.”

(6/6) On the necessity of accelerating adaptation to climate change, he explains:

“While many countries and communities are already undertaking the transition towards low carbon and sustainable economies, the rise of an adaptation economy ... is still to be seen.” #COP30Brazil

(2/3) Through the UAE-Belém work programme, the technical expert group recently put forth a draft set of 100 globally relevant indicators—these were narrowed down from a set of over 9,500! #COP30Brazil #COP30 #UNFCCC
