"The Sign of Fire," Rileck said over the dull growl of flowing lava. He pointed towards a high wall, bidding the others to look as well. There, among shattered clumps of stone and volcanic glass was set into the wall eight gargantuan rubies, twisted and placed into a faceted expression of fire. From under the lowest of the gems dripped a few slow streams of hot fluid stone, there to join the river below.

For a change, the precis of an in-universe essay I'm writing as a companion piece for the next short story.
Precis For three centuries, the flourishing of what has become called the new magic has directed Araegosian innovation, the growth and development of our culture, and all manner of technological advancement. However, in the last fifty years there have been few promising inventions, and little done to break free of our stagnation. I propose here that we must turn our attention inward, and develop a new relationship with the powers Vehrin left us in Her death. We should look to the example of the immortals if we are to end the stagnation and prevent its inevitable result: our decline as a nation and culture.

Audiences wanted to relate to the performance, to believe that they - like the bard - could be heroes or at least witness heroic things. It was a reflection of themselves they wanted to see on little stages, not some grand old ideal of great eras past. And besides, there was the growing problem of the fae.

Prologue, first paragraph to start strong.
Just outside the cold midnight glow of amethyst street lamps, four toughs wrongly thought had a banker cornered in an alley. Lacinus could still hear the reassuring buzz of lighting, despite being clad in shadows, both before and behind him, so he knew the alley wasn't that deep, but this was the best place he'd found so far to stand his ground without drawing attention. He had been running since midnight, threading his way through the winding central city districts of Merdol, but the brutes found him not three long blocks from where he had planned to drop into the sewer system on his way back to the bank’s safehouse. Going by the underground would have taken longer than making his way through the city's crowded markets, but there was less risk of pickpockets down in the muck.
