Haha no worries, enjoy the research! I was raised mostly on Lee Kernaghan, who is big in country circles here. On the more recent end of things I think Adam Brand got decently big for a while in country circles, and there's also Keith Urban (country-pop and more in the American tradition)

Another big one is Slim Dusty who was a really unique character and basically regarded as like the patron deity of Australian country music

One of the interesting unique influences is old bush poetry, particularly the works of Banjo Patterson. As well as plenty of songs directly quoting him or sometimes even just being his poems put to music, there's a great tragic storytelling tradition that feels like an extension of the genre

I also grew up partially on country music thanks to my dad, although it was Australian country which back in the day was a little different (it's more americanised now). And yeah I feel exactly the same way

ewww I've seen some of that on YouTube recaps of popular music atm and it's soooo bad, like a pure pastiche of country music with no depth or soul or genuine emotion, just a string of empty cliches calculated to reinforce people's ignorant jingoism >.< I'm not even a country hater generally

Yeah like obviously it's absolutely fine if that's your cup of tea, but if that's what you're praising it's not really going to do much to sell me on their music being good. (And might even make me think that by extension if that's all you like about them maybe it's an indication that it's not!)

Otoh I do think that when most of what you hear about a band is other girls saying they like them because the guys are really hot that's not the most convincing recommendation 😅

Oh gosh yeah, that's the struggle! You go into it out of love for books and by the end of the degree they've managed to turn reading into a really draining chore :(
