Rethink the Deal
@rethinkthedeal.com
Rethink the Deal is raising a question too many leaders are afraid to ask: Why are hard-working, high-performing states shelling out billions to a federal system that gives them less in return—and often works against them?
“Just get a job.”

Except 74% of working-age SNAP recipients in Massachusetts already have one, yet still rely on SNAP to eat.

And for every dollar MA sends to Washington, it gets only 70 cents back.

Make it make sense, @mcsquared.bsky.social.

While Trump threatens to strip over $3 billion in funding to fight homelessness, NY only gets 76¢ back for every $1 it sends to the federal government.

New Yorkers are already being shortchanged & now 170,000 people are at risk.

Does this sound like a fair deal, @newyorkstateag.bsky.social?

Lower costs?

We're right with you, @kim.senate.gov, as a recent @fortune.com article underlines the exact opposite.

NJ residents are already paying more to the federal government than they get back: 61¢ back for every $1 paid.

This isn't fair.
November 24, 2025 at 3:05 PM
Yep, @kirstengillibrand.bsky.social.

While the Trump administration is leaving New Yorkers and Americans behind, New Yorkers continue to foot the bill.

For every dollar paid to the federal government, New York receives only 76¢ back.

Now that doesn't seem very fair.

While Trump and @whitehouse-47.bsky.social may see ACA tax credits as a waste, millions of New Yorkers need this support.

Check out the @kff.org map, which illustrates just how important these credits are for Americans across the country,
@governor.ny.gov.

The build-up to #midterms2026 just got more interesting as the GOP took a major blow in its Texas gerrymandering efforts.

According to @paulmitche11.bsky.social, #Prop50 is not immediately implicated by this court's decision.

All good news for @democrats.org.
November 18, 2025 at 8:03 PM
It's messed up, @kim.senate.gov.

As NJ Assembly member-elect @katiebrennan.bsky.social said:

"We have to show Trump it is not okay."

These funds have been held hostage by the Trump Admin for too long.
November 18, 2025 at 3:59 PM
For every $1 Colorado sends to the federal government, it gets just 83¢ back. Colorado pays their share, but @whitehouse-47.bsky.social doesn't care.

Trump refuses to protect the 225,000 Coloradans who rely on health care subsidies.

Coloradans deserve better right, @senatorhick.govpeeps.us?

While the Trump Administration deprioritizes climate policy and cuts critical energy funding, state leaders like
@governor.ca.gov are filling this void.

Why aren't you representing the U.S at #COP30
@whitehouse-47.bsky.social?

Like the millions of Americans who will see astronomical premiums in the new year, @massgovernor.bsky.social is fed up with Republicans' lack of urgency.

More than 300,000 Massachusetts residents could lose critical assistance to access health insurance if federal tax credits expire.

As we celebrate Veterans Day, the federal gov't is withholding SNAP benefits from millions of veterans.

What an odd way to thank them for their service,
@housedemocrats.bsky.social.

@visualcap.bsky.social map shows the millions of Americans who rely on this critical food assistance ⬇️

That’s right, @georgetakei.bsky.social!

We’ve been tracking the states that contribute more than they receive from the federal government and the findings follow this same trend.

This map alone shows more blue states as “donor” states ⬇️

In a damning indictment of federal leadership, the bipartisan @natlgovsassoc.bsky.social, chaired by Oklahoma's Republican Governor Kevin Stitt, has called on congressional leadership to end the shutdown, according to @politico.com.

SNAP is a lifeline for millions that has become a pawn in political games, @rbreich.bsky.social.

Could someone please help the senator from Kentucky?

Maybe @usafacts.org can lend a hand.

After yesterday's results, let's revisit this @cjtackett.bsky.social.

Want to know what TX, NY, NJ, and IL have in common?

They all pay more to Washington than they receive in return.

TX receives only 84¢ for every $1.
NY only 76¢ for every $1.
NJ only 61¢ for every $1.
IL only 87¢ for every $1.

Just yesterday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed this is "America's Golden Age."

Just curious, if that's the case, why did @democrats.org win so widely last night?

That doesn't really reflect that people are happy with the status quo.

Asking for a friend, @calltoactivism.bsky.social.🤔
November 5, 2025 at 6:03 PM
Wake up feeling more hope, @walshfreedom.bsky.social.

It's a new day, but the work continues & it is beyond time that states get their fair share from the federal government.

New York, New Jersey, and California all pay more to the federal government than they receive in return.

The Trump Admin wants to defy the recent court order to disburse SNAP benefits.

What does this mean? Over 1 million Bay Staters will not receive their benefits = 16% of the population in Mass, per @newsweek.com.

How are you standing up for your constituents & to Trump, @warren.senate.gov?
November 4, 2025 at 7:12 PM
And they have, @repescobar.bsky.social!

Again, the Trump administration is politicizing a safety net like SNAP that should be out of bounds for brinksmanship.

Our recent blog highlights the dangerous game that elected officials are playing.

People's lives are at stake.

This is Trump's America.

Plus, being a Floridian & Nutmegger means funding the federal government while the state gets less in return.

If this is happening to a donor state that voted for him, like Florida, what do you think will continue to happen to blue states, @chrismurphyct.bsky.social?
November 4, 2025 at 6:47 PM
Donald Trump says it would be "hard" to give NYC money if @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social wins tomorrow.

Well, @60minutes.bsky.social, the president must keep forgetting that states like New York are the economic engines that fund the federal government.

Why bite the hand that feeds you?
November 3, 2025 at 4:00 PM
This #Halloween2025, let's consider what's truly terrifying, @jeanpocket.bsky.social .

Within 24 hours, a lapse in SNAP funding will see families worry about putting food on the table.

AND The reality is that many states pour money into the federal government to get pennies in return.
