I think literature is a reflection of reality, even when not directly there are parallels, which can make us think.

The book may very well serve as a warning, but it's also a blueprint for authoritarianism/oligarchy, which is frightening.

Did you find any parts of 1984 frightening? If so, what frightened you the most?

Based on your reading of 1984, would you say George Orwell is a misogynist? Explain why or why not.

Is this your first read of 1984 or have you read before? If it's your first read, what is your key takeaway? If a re-read, what did you gain from revisiting?

Talk about the often quoted:

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command”

…and what it means to you, within the context of having read the book, 1984.

Werewolf, but it's spelled "Wherewolf" and it's just the townfolk looking for the wolf. They ca hear it howling, but they can't figure out from where.

Awesome! I had the best book club discussion with university students during banned books week when I was still working (Handmaid's Tale). It's such a wonderful experience when they engage; glad you had a great discussion!

I didn't plan this, but fortuitously the 2025 Banned Books Week theme is "Censorship is so 1984," and the #BannedBookSkyClub October 2025 book, with discussion beginning October 9th, during Banned Books Week, is (you guessed it) 1984 by George Orwell.

I've never read before either. It was time.

There are library leaders who seem to like to pit librarians and library staff against each other. I found it incredibly bizarre and counter-productive.
