Nope! SIGN's set about 6 months before the first games and is intended to be your entry point

If you don't mind slow-burn shows, the anime .hack//SIGN is excellent and sets up a lot of what the original 4 games (IMOQ) conclude. The games on Steam (GU) are a sequel and are mostly a completely different story, so you might miss some references but is way easier to actually find and play now

IMOQ is so good, but yeah it demands a lot of time! I'd love a remaster/remake to show up some time

(Graham Linehan is in the credits of season 1 for helping the show get made, but Moran advised Linehan had 0 input on the show otherwise and was not credited in s2-3)

Dylan Moran is great too, he has this "constantly on the edge of crashing out" vibe which is quite good. He had me in shambles laughing at a bit about how he deserves jam more than his kids when I saw him live. His show Black Books was great too
