The Wakaba family is genuinely such an unsettling family. I feel that the implications surrounding Mutsumi and her family won’t resonate with anyone unfamiliar with a specific kind of child abuse, where a child is publicly cherished but privately neglected or emotionally shunned.

You can tell from the manga that their close dynamic in the anime was born from two broken people, left in the aftermath of a broken band, too lost to mend what was shattered, too broken to save anything but each other, the only thing left to save.

It's quite poetic how Soyo clings to Mutsumi as her final salvation of holding CRYCHiC together, while Mutsumi, drowning in the guilt of having broken it, stays by her side, not out of hope, but out of a lingering sense of responsibility.
