in the flashback chapters he mentions repeatedly how sick he is of society. he defines gilbert's "purity" as an individual neglected by others in the first critical years of his life and under his sole control thereafter. and the more involved he gets with raising him, the more he starts isolating

too lazy for a more comprehensible write up, but imo his attitude toward gilbert is more the result of his misanthropy than straightforward perversion (although he still is a pervert)
