35 years ago I earned a PhD in history from the University of Michigan but did not have enough money to go back for the ceremony. (Spent all my savings on the defense.) A dear friend from grad school has gifted me her robe & hood, making me unexpectedly dewy-eyed. I have a hood so it’s now official.
