Like its possible to have bad games and its possible to play games poorly, I don’t vibe with the Rule of Cool shit, but at the same time I don’t really think of me running B/X or Troika! or Songbirds for my pals is engaging in the same activity as playing Wanderhome or Good Society at a con.

I think the discourse is stupid because this is so transparently 2 different hobbies with different goals, different approaches, and different concepts of what “game design” entails that the argument is absurd. Its explaining to football players how far off the ground the hoop should be.

This applies to *so many communities.* “Why did Big Content Creator Who Was So Central To My Hobby Stop Making Videos About It” because its no longer the hot shit Agnes, and this person doesnt care about you or your thing they care about being seen which requires alignment to the hot shit.

People really dont get that people who are famous often set out to be that, first and foremost. The mechanism of attention is irrelevant, and remains irrelevant once achieved. Pivots aren’t a reevaluation of ideology, they are a preservation of status quo by never allowing the public gaze to drift.

that show then ended with them playing California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade which is also 10 minutes long and iirc Colin was lying flat on his back on stage by the end

The Decemberists did 3 nights in Brooklyn back in 2018 or so and when we went on the third night they just went fuck it and played the entirety of Hazards of Love straight through no brakes all gas right from go I could not stop vibrating for a week

I got to see them over the summer and was mildly disappointed they didnt play this lol

I do it too! Its the base instinct to “writing characters I will never play”
or giving my FFXIV character an elaborate backstory I will never “experience” or see depicted and so on.

For sure, we call it Rotating the Blorbos in my group, roots in tumblr OC/roleplay culture, has fandoms fixations on canonicity and self-reflexive relational identifiers to characters/fiction-constructs etc. rather than emergent narrative.

Yeah like people talk about cultures of play but even beyond the AP Fandom/5e Lifestyle sphere Ive often called ttrpg 5 hobbies in a trenchcoat. Even within that space folks arent universally trying to reproduce the same experience - the hobby means something different from go.

Honestly I blame a lot of “prestige” media writing being built around mystery boxes, where the progression of the plot hinged on revealing explicit canonicity. It calcified conversations about media as relating toward speculation on a determinant “true” plot development.

Fandom these days seems to perceive fiction as a sort of psychic accounting of some perspective on a theoretical world that exists, intrinsically complete, coherent, and causal, as opposed to art made by humans with conscious intent to express ideas and emotions and theme.

its funny how much one side of the internet hates the humanities largely because its basically impossible to be More Correct about them

Ian Fujimoto, Brian Lagerstrom, Internet Shaquille, Chef John are my go-tos that I actually use to learn to cook things.

You Will Die In This Place is worth reading even if you never play it or never would
