I think they planned this from the beginning when they "offered" Ukraine the rare earths deal. Even by Trump's standards, the proposed deal was stupid, and they probably knew it was unacceptable to Ukraine - and then they just kept going until Selenskiy gave them a reason to abandon Ukraine.
