Incidentally, not a lot of people know this but the Nant-y-Gro dam near Rhayader was blown up in 1942 in a "proof of concept" experiment by a certain inventive chap by the name of Barnes Wallis.

Said test led to the successful bombing of the Möhne and Eder dams in Germany on 16th May 1943.
