A little life update: I’m delighted to have received a distinction in my MPhil and am very excited to be starting my PhD in ASNC in October, funded by the AHRC OOC-DTP and Trinity Hall!

🔈🔔 I’m very happy to announce the contract is signed for ‘Medieval Fragmentology: Provenance, Contexts and Interdisciplinarity’. This edited volume will bring together a great range of exciting research into MSS, textiles, architecture…

I can’t wait to get started!

My other half is keeping count of my many complaints (and quite colourful language)!

Can’t help but think I’d find #KingAndConqueror much more enjoyable if I didn’t work on medieval history…

I'm looking forward to returning to Reykjavík to present my paper at the 31st Congress of Nordic Historians on Wednesday. I am very grateful to the AHRC’s Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership for funding my attendance!

CFP: Leeds International Medieval Congress (6-9 July 2026)
Thematic Focus: ‘Temporalities’

The past decades have seen exciting developments in medieval liturgical scholarship, moving beyond analysis of texts to examining liturgical practices as diverse, lived, localised, and contested devotional frameworks. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the study of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours: the cycle of daily prayers structured around the eight canonical hours (Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline) central to the spiritual, intellectual, temporal and communal life of the medieval Christian world.

This panel invites proposals for 15-20 minute papers on any aspect of Medieval Office Liturgy, especially those that address new perspectives, methodologies, or understudied sources.

Topics may include (but are not limited to):
⁃ Office Manuscripts
⁃ Intersections with visual and material culture
⁃ Lay experiences of the Divine Office
⁃ Liturgical Reform
⁃ Performance Practices and/or Prescriptions
⁃ The Liturgy of the Hours in Medieval Literature
⁃ Temporality and the Canonical Hours
⁃ Saints lives, cults and offices

Please send an abstract of up to 250 words and short biography including your affiliation(s) to Rhiannon Warren (rlow2@cam.ac.uk) by the 31st of August 2025

Really enjoyed presenting my paper at @imc-leeds.bsky.social this morning in Session 1121: ‘Medieval Fragments II: Theological/ Liturgical Manuscripts + Incunabula’. Thank you @manuelmunoz.bsky.social for organising such an exciting and insightful set of four sessions! So many ideas to think about…

Quick update: I passed my registration viva last Thursday, and am now officially a PhD Candidate!

There’s a lot more work to do over the next few years but I’m excited to have reached this milestone in my research career.

I'm looking forward to presenting my research on the máldagabækur and the use of the breviary in the medieval Icelandic parish church at the 16th Bergen International Symposium in Old Norse Studies this coming week! This paper is based on a chapter of my PhD thesis.

Looking forward to presenting a paper on the máldagar (Icelandic church inventory charters). I will be exploring what they can tell us about liturgical books and devotional practices in the parish church at the 31st Congress of Nordic Historians in Reykjavík this August!

Spending this morning transcribing a fragment of a 12th century Icelandic lectionary. It’s somehow easier than my task yesterday (checking one name in a litany in Cotton Vitellius A VII in the British Library) though I think the cotton fire had a lot to do with that!

And here are the other two projects I completed in 2024 - the (rather well-endowed) tree is from a kit by the wonderful opus anglicanum embroidery!

Today is the feast of the translation of St Þorlákr, bishop of Skálholt 1178-1193.

AM 241 a II fol contains the rhymed office Þorlákstíðir (fol. 1v-2r pictured). The entire manuscript is digitised online: handrit.is/manuscript/vie…

I am delighted to be attending #IMC2025! I'll be moderating the panel I organised on Christian Practices in the Medieval North and presenting a paper on Árni Magnússon's fragmentation of Latin Liturgical Manuscripts.
rhnnnwrrn.bsky.social
I identified this fragment (AM 241 III α fol) the other day! The ‘In Natalicio Sancti Olaui Regis et Martyris’ beginning with the (partial) response for the seventh lesson at first vespers. Best feeling ever!

A little thread to introduce myself:

I’m Rhiannon (she/her) and I’m a postgraduate medievalist in the ASNC department at the University of Cambridge, researching Icelandic liturgical manuscript fragments in the Arnamagnaæn collection (AM 241 b I fol) and hopefully a future codicologist!
