But when the ENIAC machine was publicly launched in February 1946 the women programmers were relegated to the role of hostesses, and official reports and early histories of computing made no mention of female operators.

In June 1945 she was one of six women selected to work on the room-sized ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) and is credited with suggesting the concept of subroutines.

The MS of the Week is on display in the Reading Room of the Library this week from 10.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.30 Monday – Friday, with the exception of Wednesday, when the Library will be closed in the morning. No appointment or reader’s ticket is required to view the MS of the Week.

The manuscript of the week is RIA MS 23 P 26, the Book of Fenagh. This 16th century manuscript is mainly a revision of an older Book of St Caillín which no longer survives. The mark the manuscript’s 500th anniversary in 2016, an online exhibition was created and two lunchtime lectures were delivered

Although called to the bar simultaneously, Deverell was the first woman to practise at the bar in Ireland when she was called to the northern bar in 1922. In another first, Dorothea Heron was the first woman to be apprenticed as a solicitor in Ireland.

In early 1920, Averill Deverell and Frances Kyle were the first women admitted to King's Inns, and when they were called to the Irish bar in November 1921 they made legal history as the first women in Britain and Ireland to be admitted to the bar.
