I still treasure my Soft Cell Soul Inside twofer, which was not only a cracking return to form with the A-side, it also features a remix of the fan favourite LP track Loving You, Hating Me. Plus there’s a cover of the Bond movie theme You Only Live Twice, and an ace bit of sleeve design to boot.

Went to see Trevor Horn and his band on tour recently. Both Plastic Age and a cover of It’s Different For Girls (as per your previous TOTP post) featured in the set - with Trevor Horn saying the Joe Jackson tune was one of his all time favourites.

I can remember seeing Hot House play a college gig in West London in the late 1980s. Distinctly recall them performing another glorious, slow-burning and restrained slice of Britsoul with ‘As Hard As I Try’. Still spin it now, nearly 40 years on.

Thanks for this Pete. I’d never really clocked Valerie Simpson’s solo records before, and this was an enlightening appraisal piece. Suffice to say since reading it - and dipping into both the LPs via Spotify - there’s a couple of Discogs vendors a few quid better off now than they were first thing.
