The American author Bill Bryson rightly pointed out that there are more accents between the Trent and the Tweed (the north of England) than the whole of North America. Geographical accents make up only part of it. Class accents add an extra layer of complexity.

Papers didn’t start to really grow until the 80s. Remember having to split the Sunday Times into its different sections and take out the colour supplement to squeeze the whole paper in dribs and drabs through letterboxes designed by Victorians for, well, letters.
