They had gathered at a jazz club in Harlem. They were five altogether: Michel Choucair, Kieran Prendergast, Henriette Sarr, Fokisi Lomu and Lisa Wong. The club was owned by a friend of Kieran's. It was, of course, not yet open for business, would not be for several hours.

I had also had to stop there in order to obtain some cash for the trip from my, that is Gillian's, account at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. I was somewhat nervous doing this. The potential for exposure as an imposter was an ever-present concern.

"I'll give you my view, but you must decide for yourself, Gillian. It's time to assert yourself, Child!

"And understand that, like everyone here, I'm going to look at the situation of the country from the standpoint of my own community.

"I heard what happened this morning at Prayers. Nalini told me. I thought you would have come straight over. It's what you usually do."

I was not sure how to respond to this. Apparently, Zeinab and Gillian are close.

He handed her his gift, which she tore open immediately.

"Oh, you lovely man!" she exclaimed. "It's absolutely exquisite. I'm quite tempted to take you home with me."

"Don't be ridiculous!" was Madam Pak's immediate and forceful response. "My stupid husband was entirely responsible for his own death. There was no murder, unless you can murder yourself."

As I stood up to stretch, having spent some three hours hunched over my desk, the telephone rang, and I picked it up.

"Hello?"

"Gillian, have you forgotten?"

"Now Mr Harrogate," Mr Ri was saying in his impeccable English, "may I call you Rodney? We're both just ordinary citizens these days, isn't it?"

"Yes, Minister, but what should I call you?"

He suddenly found a distinguished Korean gentleman standing right in front of him and looking him straight in the eye. Quite unusual.
