Astronomers discover the earliest, hottest galaxy cluster in the universe, and it breaks all the rules

The galaxy cluster appears hotter and more mature than it should for its young age, challenging what we think we know about how these cities of galaxies form.

100 years ago today, #OTD in 1925, Edwin Hubble announced that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were definitely separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell.

There was no doubt that the Universe was more than just our little island of stars. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

If asked i would say that the Rosetta images of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko are tied with those of Satrun by Cassini as the most dramatic and incredible of a solar system object ever returned via spacecraft. Just look at the mood here.

Feels like the only posts of mine that go viral are the ones with my northern lights photography. So if you're interested in chasing lights in Iceland with a scientist on a side quest one evening, let me know.

We can talk about Kp v Hp, solar cycles, aurora ovals, all of it!

A disruptive neighbour www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed...
Though interesting to look at, NGC 1511 is one galaxy you might not want for a neighbour. Seen in this ESA/Hubble Picture of the Week, NGC 1511 is a peculiar spiral galaxy located roughly 50 million light-years away in the constellation Hydrus.
