NRT nature conservancies serve as tourist parks and "carbon removal projects", used by companies like @netflix.com & Meta to offset their emissions. NRT says it supports local institutions "led by and serving Indigenous communities". However, voices from the ground tell a different story.

Protests against NRT are often put down by force. On 8 May 2023, police in Kenya reportedly fired live ammunition and tear gas at unarmed villagers who were protesting the opening of a new NRT office and a conservation project launched without their consent.
