What do you think she’s thinking about? 💭

In Portrait of a Girl Dressed in Blue, Johannes Verspronck painted a child in her Sunday best: pearls, lace and a gown far beyond her years. Following the custom of the time, she’s shown as a miniature adult lady.

When the World Expo took over the Museum Square in 1895, they went all out, including placing a full-size ship right in front of the Rijksmuseum.

The ship was transformed into a floating restaurant where visitors could dine.🚢

These are the syndics of the Amsterdam drapers’ guild, who inspected cloth for a year. Although six men are shown, only five were syndics. The man without a hat is their servant, Frans Hendricksz Bel, who lived in the Staalhof and didn’t pay for his portrait. 🎩

The painter Pieter Frederik van Os surrounded himself with inspiration: nude model drawings, plaster casts, a sketch of a goat, and a horseshoe, clues to his focus on painting animals. A young pupil kneels by the grand 17th-century fireplace. ✨

Did Pieter de Hooch paint a boy or a girl?

It’s… a boy! In the 17th century both girls and boys wore dresses until they were about 7 years old. Textiles were very expensive, so this way siblings could wear the same clothes over and over again. 👦
