The "surprise!" aspect of it was the worst. If it had just been part of the description, people could avoid it if needed, and the hijinks of the rest of the plot would still work. Sorry you found your way to that one in particular :/

Unsure about the rest of the world, but this is not common at all in the US! We typically just use "heart" for both the shape meaning affection and the anatomical organ. And the candy that other countries referred to as "love hearts" are called "conversation hearts" here as far as I know
