And btw, our study (regrettably) only had cis gender men and women in it. They are extending their purge far beyond trans/non-binary research.

The field of gender and sexual minority (LGBTQ) health is being erased. Hundreds of ongoing NIH grants being immediately terminated. Deb Umberson and my decade long longitudinal study on marriage and health joined the termination list last night.

My federal grants with @wendymanning.bsky.social and Ann Meier were terminated last week. The language from the termination is below. It has been sad as we are being forced to say goodbye to members of our team. We are figuring out next steps. We remain deeply committed to studying all families.
This award no longer effectuates agency priorities. Research programs based primarily on artificial and non-scientific categories, including amorphous equity objectives, are antithetical to the scientific inquiry, do nothing to expand our knowledge of living systems, provide low returns on investment, and ultimately do not enhance health, lengthen life, or reduce illness. Worse, so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) studies are often used to support unlawful discrimination on the basis of race and other protected characteristics, which harms the health of Americans. Therefore, it is the policy of NIH not to prioritize such research programs.

Thank you for sharing. Please don’t feel bad posting. We all need to see the direct impacts of what’s going on. I’m so sorry.

Just learned my team’s NIA R01 on LGBTQ health that was set to be reviewed today was dropped from the study section last minute. Heard several other LGBTQ grants had the same fate.

Reminder that ipums.org has all the acs, census, CPS, NHIS, MEPS, and so much more. Bonus that it’s cleaned and harmonized in ways that make these data really easy to use in practice.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

This is a big deal, y'all. Federal health websites are being stripped of content or removed in their entirety. Stick with this thread for a look at what's disappeared so far! 1/x

For 20 years I have used data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey to educate many thousands of students about trends in teen sexual behavior. Now, because Trump and MAGA are afraid of knowledge and education, access to this information -- vital knowledge -- is denied the public. (From my textbook:

Social scientists are actually excellent at how to successfully share data with each other. We're going to need organize, and actively seek to help each, to ensure ongoing access to data.

I have these (evidently censured) data and am happy to share with anyone. Just email me [email protected]

The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey has monitored the wellbeing of America’s high school students since 1991.

Since 2015, it’s been a vital source of data on LGBQ youth. In 2023, it provided the first ever nationally representative sample of transgender teens.

As of this morning, it’s gone.

To instrumentalize what my sister is saying below: every time someone says DEI say “you mean civil rights?” Every time someone says they are against woke reply “oh so you’re a segregationist!” Words have meaning! Don’t allow that nonsense to stand.

Only saying once on bsky b/c I know it is not entirely useful, but it is totally exhausting that in 2016 some of us said “they’re Nazis,” some of us screamed “they’re segregationists,” and a whole lot of very serious people now posting about them being Nazis and segregationists gaslight us for years

CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) has provided real-time data and analysis about disease outbreaks and emerging health threats without a break every week since 1960.

Until today.
