This is a baffling line of argument. It’s a spy thriller with all the tropes of the spy genre but if it isn’t a hardboiled Hong Kong action flick it isn’t genre? Do you know what “genre film” means? Not trying to be snarky but it doesn’t mean Die Hard or The Killer. Maybe you’re confusing the term.

I guess one can debate anything but Black Bag is a stylish, sly spy romp with gunplay - not sure how this is classified as anything other than a genre film - also Soderbergh loves a genre.

I just watched this and holy shit

I feel wiped out - stunning and almost unbearable in moments. A few times a wave of sorrow hit me - and other moments so suspenseful and mind-boggling. It also reminded me of IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT in a lot of ways.

hyperbole. I could imagine this as a perfect double-feature with #ItWasJustAnAccident - they share DNA. What a year for international features. Do yourself a favor and at least see these exceptional films that were singled out early 2025 by Cannes & critics. #filmsky

How dare.

Agree! I found it surprisingly witchy too with little homages to classic folk horror films - which I loved, of course.
