You can actually get start trails in light polluted places, just looks a bit different obviously. Check out Alyn Wallace's tutorial, he does it in his back yard. This was a collection of about 200 exposures over the course of 2 hours. I had to blend the foreground and sky layer separately.

If you're talking about what I think, they're either clouds getting lit up by the moonrise behind the arch or "air glow". I'm not really sure :)

It was cloudy in Moab :( did you have to stack another image to get those few stars or were they just there naturally?

I can't remember exactly for this one but I usually use the NPF rule or rule of 300 to get close. All my lenses are f/1.8 or wider which helps a lot lol
